Bob woke suddenly, dreams instantly forgotten. He felt an immediate sense of panic at not recognizing his surroundings.

Then he remembered.

The new rental.

He checked his watch. It was just after six in the morning. He’d slept, motionless, in the chair for nearly ten hours.

He looked over at the burner phone. There were no new calls.

Bob took a shower and changed into fresh clothes, an innocuous black T-shirt and jeans to go with his summer jacket.

He checked his other phone on the way to the kitchen, but there were no calls from Wanda. Eventually, they would tell her she had to get some rest, probably give her a police escort. But a day after her husband was shot, leniency was to be expected.

That meant she probably wouldn’t show up at the condo until that afternoon or the following day if the police were being compassionate. He’d left the spare key with the building’s resident manager in case he wasn’t there.

He went through his morning exercises. Despite no longer being recommended, due to punishing the joints, he followed the Canadian Air Force 5BX calisthenics program from the 1970s, a grueling half-hour regimen of stretches, push-ups and jogging in place.

Another half-hour passed as he cooled down. He cooked an egg-white omelet and watched the news on the small flat-screen provided for guests.

The shooting investigation was offering nothing new, but the story did say police were aware of the biker harassment and equally stumped by the connection to two men at the motel.

He glanced over at the cloned phone.

How long before Denny Roulette says something incriminating? He had no way of knowing. But given the troubles of the two prior days, he expected it wouldn’t take—

The cloned phone began to vibrate.
